Kendall Jenner Goes Polka Dot in Valentino

Kendall Jenner had been carrying the idea of polka dots around for months. She told Vogue that she had wanted to wear them on a red carpet for a long time, and when she brought it up with her stylist, Danielle Goldberg, the two began trading inspiration photos well before any invitation had arrived. Over those months the idea took shape slowly, image by image, until it found its home at Valentino with Alessandro Michele. By the time the sixth annual Academy Museum Gala came around on Saturday, October 17, in Los Angeles, the polka dots were waiting for her in a custom gown made just for that night.

The gala raises money for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, for its exhibitions, its screenings, and its education programs, and every October it fills the museum with people from film, music, and fashion. Michele dressed several guests for the evening, including Colman Domingo, Elle Fanning, Cailee Spaeny, and Clairo, so there was plenty of Valentino moving through the room. Even so, it was Jenner’s dress that people kept coming back to, partly because of the print itself and partly because it was so different from what she usually wears.

The Dress

The gown is made of two halves that speak to each other. It starts at the top with a strapless black bodice, softly ruched across the torso, so the fabric gathers in small folds that follow the shape of her body. White dots are scattered over that black, and they are all slightly different, some small and some a little larger, placed loosely, so the pattern feels relaxed. Because the fabric is gathered, the dots stretch and bend with every fold, and the print seems to move a little each time she turns.

Then, at the waist, the colors flip. The skirt is a glossy ivory satin with much larger black dots spread across it, the same print as the top in reverse and on a bigger scale. The satin has a soft shine of its own, and the dots catch the light on top of it, so the skirt glows under the cameras while the bodice stays matte and dark. Where the two halves meet, a small frill curves over the hip like a short peplum, and a satin bow is tied at one side, which softens the line between the black and the ivory and gives the dress a sweet, slightly vintage touch.

From there the skirt runs all the way to the floor and pools into a long train behind her. A high slit opens at the front, and it is lined in black on the inside, so each step shows a quick flash of the bodice color down near her leg. The detail is easy to miss in a still photo, and in motion it ties the whole dress together, bringing the black from the top all the way down to the hem.

The Shoes

The shoes are the part of the look you only discover if you keep watching. Jenner wore pointed white pumps covered in tiny black polka dots, a smaller version of the dots on the skirt, so the pattern shrinks again on its way down to the floor. The heel itself is striped in black and white, a single line of stripes in an outfit made entirely of dots. They stay hidden under the satin most of the time and only appear when the slit opens or the train shifts as she walks, which made them feel like a small secret inside the look. Once people noticed them, they became one of the most talked about details of the night.

The Styling

Everything around the dress was kept simple so the print could take the lead. Her hair was pulled back into a sleek bun with a clean center part, which kept her neck and shoulders open above the strapless bodice. Her makeup stayed soft and fresh, with rosy cheeks and a glossy pink lip, and her jewelry came from Cartier, mainly a pair of diamond earrings that caught the light the same way the dots on the skirt did. A deep red polish on her nails added the only real color to the look, a small warm note in the middle of all that black and white.

Jenner usually keeps to clean, plain dresses on the red carpet, with neutral colors and almost no pattern, and that is exactly what makes this look feel so fresh on her. It still has everything she is known for, the precise fit, the long elegant line, and the calm styling, and the polka dots carry it somewhere lighter and more playful. You can follow the dots from the small white ones on the bodice to the large black ones on the skirt to the tiny ones on her shoes, and the stripes on the heel close the story with a little wink at the very end.
