There is nothing worse than hopping on a plane and realizing you forgot your current read, your headphones, or noticing mid-flight that your skin is begging to be refreshed and moisturized. Summer travel should feel effortless, and a well-packed carry-on is honestly where that starts. I put together this essentials list so you are fully covered on every trip this summer, and honestly most of these work beyond the plane, during your trip and after as well. A few of them have genuinely changed how I travel, a few I have not tried personally yet but have made the list based on what people who have are saying, and all of them are worth knowing about. I hope you take something useful out of my tips and tricks.
Beauty
The beauty section of a carry-on is not about recreating your full routine at 35,000 feet. It is about keeping your skin functional, your lips hydrated, and arriving looking like you did not just spend eight hours in recycled air.

Dieux Instant Angel Lipid-Rich Firming Moisturizer
Dieux has built a reputation for formulas that are genuinely effective rather than just well-packaged, and the Instant Angel is one of the brand’s most loved products for good reason. It is a lipid-rich moisturizer designed to reinforce the skin barrier, which is exactly what a long flight demands given how aggressively the cabin air strips moisture from the skin. The formula works by replenishing the lipids that keep the barrier intact, meaning it addresses the actual cause of in-flight skin dullness rather than just sitting on top of it. Applied before boarding and again mid-flight, it makes a noticeable difference in how your skin feels on arrival.

Hale Derma Hypochlorous Acid
Hypochlorous acid has become one of the more talked-about ingredients in skincare over the last few years, and for good reason. It is a naturally occurring molecule that the body’s own immune system produces to fight bacteria and inflammation, and in mist form it works as a gentle, effective way to calm redness, sanitize the skin without disrupting the barrier, and refresh the face without adding any product weight. On a plane it is particularly useful because you can spray it directly over makeup or bare skin, it settles quickly, and it brings down any irritation or puffiness that develops during a long flight. It is also one of the few skincare products that doubles as a practical hygiene tool, making it genuinely multi-purpose in a carry-on context.

Peptide Lip Boost Plumping Lip Mask
Lips are one of the first things to show the effects of dry cabin air, and a dedicated lip mask rather than a simple balm makes a real difference on longer flights. This one uses peptides alongside plumping actives to hydrate and support the lip barrier rather than just coating the surface, which means the results last beyond the flight itself. Apply a generous layer before sleeping on the plane and you will land with lips that feel conditioned rather than chapped.

The Mermaid Brush Essential Boar Bristle Brush
I have been using a boar bristle brush for a couple of years and it is one of those things that once you switch you do not go back. The natural bristles distribute your hair’s own oils from root to end, which means less frizz, more shine, and hair that actually looks like itself. The Mermaid Brush is the version I use and it travels well, compact enough to fit anywhere in your bag without taking up real estate.

Vanity Case
A good vanity case is one of the most practical things you can have in a carry-on. Keeping your beauty products in a dedicated, structured case means everything is findable, nothing leaks onto anything else, and the whole bag stays organized across multiple legs of a trip. The right one is worth investing in once and keeping for years.
Mind and Entertainment
Long flights create a rare kind of enforced stillness that with the right preparation you can actually use well. These three things are about making that time feel intentional rather than just endured.

The Nervous System Reset
This is my current read, and it could not have come at a better time. The nervous system has become one of the more discussed topics in wellness over the last few years, and for good reason. Chronic stress, disrupted sleep, and the general pace of modern life all affect the nervous system in ways that accumulate over time, and most people are operating with a higher baseline level of activation than they realize. This book approaches that reality practically, offering tools and frameworks for understanding how the nervous system works and how to actively work with it rather than against it. A long flight, with its enforced distance from the usual demands of daily life, is actually one of the better environments in which to read something like this, no notifications, no interruptions, just you and the page.

Blue Light Glasses
Blue light glasses have moved firmly into fashion territory at this point, and Miu Miu’s eyewear offering sits at the intersection of genuine functionality and the kind of accessory that makes an airport outfit look considered (or any glasses of choice really). The blue light filtering lenses reduce the strain that comes from extended screen time, which is relevant on any flight where you plan to watch something or work, and the frames are the kind of thing you will reach for well beyond travel as well.

Montblanc Medium Notebook in Sartorial Leather
I fully recommend taking a journal with you on any trip, spending some quiet time with yourself, thinking, reflecting, connecting with your own mind away from the noise of daily life. I personally love Montblanc for this, every journal I own is from them and yes it is an investment, but there is something about writing in a beautiful object that actually makes you use it. It is the same logic as wearing a good workout set to the gym, it just makes you want to show up.
Extras
These are the things that do not fit neatly into a single category but that make the experience of traveling meaningfully better.

Slip Contour Sleep Mask
The Slip sleep mask has become something of a gold standard in this category, and the Contour version specifically is designed with a curved shape that leaves space around the eyes rather than pressing directly onto them, which makes it more comfortable for extended wear and better for anyone who wears eye makeup they would prefer to keep intact. The silk fabric is gentle on the skin around the eyes and blocks light effectively, which makes a real difference on a long overnight flight.

Apple EarPods USB-C
Bluetooth headphones on a plane come with more variables than most people want to deal with, a dead battery mid-flight, the anxiety of leaving one in the seat pocket, the pairing issues that always seem to happen at the worst moment. I personally prefer the EarPods for travel precisely because none of that applies. They are wired, they work instantly, and there is no risk of losing them the way you would a small case in a dark cabin. Also, beyond the convenience, Bluetooth headphones emit low-level radiation that with prolonged use, like a long flight, adds up in a way I would rather avoid.

ALŌH Peppermint Eucalyptus Sanitizing Hand Wipes
Airports and planes are among the higher-contact environments most people regularly pass through, and having something that handles hygiene without the harsh chemical smell of a standard sanitizer is a small quality of life improvement that adds up over a long travel day. The ALŌH peppermint and eucalyptus formula smells genuinely good while still doing its job, and the travel size makes it easy to keep accessible throughout the flight.
Health
Flying is genuinely hard on the body in ways that are easy to underestimate until you land somewhere feeling worse than you expected. These three products address the main culprits, dehydration, a nervous system that does not know what time zone it is in, and whatever the plane decides to do to your head.

Thorne Magnesium Glycinate
Magnesium glycinate is widely considered the most bioavailable and well-tolerated form of magnesium, meaning it absorbs effectively and is unlikely to cause the digestive discomfort that other forms can produce. Magnesium plays a role in over 300 enzymatic processes in the body, including muscle relaxation, nervous system regulation, and sleep quality, all of which become relevant on a long flight where the body is under low-level stress for hours. Thorne is one of the most trusted supplement brands on the market, third-party tested and consistently clean in its formulations, and the glycinate form specifically is well-suited to taking before sleep on a night flight or in the evening on arrival to support the transition into a new time zone.

Liquid IV Hydration Multiplier Sugar-Free White Peach
The cabin environment on a plane is significantly more dehydrating than most environments at ground level, with humidity levels that can drop considerably during a long flight. Drinking water alone does not fully compensate for this because hydration at the cellular level requires electrolytes to carry water across cell membranes effectively. Liquid IV works on a principle called Cellular Transport Technology, which uses a specific ratio of sodium, glucose, and potassium to accelerate how quickly water is absorbed by the body. The sugar-free White Peach version delivers the same hydration benefit without the added sugar of the original formula, making it a cleaner option for regular use.

Advil Dual Action Coated Caplets
The Advil Dual Action formula combines 125mg of ibuprofen with 250mg of acetaminophen in a single dose, and the two work differently enough that the combination is genuinely worth having over either alone. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory that addresses pain caused by swelling or tension, while acetaminophen works through a separate pathway in the central nervous system. Together they cover more ground, which makes this formulation particularly useful for the kind of headache that develops from pressure changes, disrupted sleep, or a long day of travel. It is the kind of thing you hope you do not need and are very glad you packed when you do.
